If you live with someone who shares expenses — partner, spouse, flatmate — inviting them to the workspace makes them a member: they see the same expenses you see, can add new ones, and (with the right role) modify them.
It takes 30 seconds: one email invite and one acceptance click.
Where to invite from
Go to Settings → Members or use the Invite button on the People screen. The form asks for:
- Email — the address of the person you want to invite
- Role — admin, editor or viewer (see Roles)
- Name — optional, for the matching person in the workspace
Click Send invite. The person receives an email from FamSpend with a link.
What the invitee receives
The email is short and clear. In essence:
[Your name] invited you to the [workspace name] workspace as editor. Click below to accept.
The link goes to the accept page:
- If the person already has a FamSpend account with that email → they sign in and land in the workspace
- If they don't → they sign up (email + password) and land in the workspace
The invite expires after 7 days. If they say "I didn't get anything" or "I waited too long", cancel the old invite and send a new one.
Existing person with same email = auto-link
If the workspace already had a person "Sara Rossi" with email
sara@example.com, and you invite sara@example.com as a member,
Sara automatically becomes the existing person. No duplicates.
See People and members: the difference for detail.
Canceling an invite
If you sent it by mistake, or want to change the role before they accept, go to Settings → Members, find the pending invite, and click Cancel invite. The person doesn't get a follow-up email — they simply find the old link no longer works.
Removing a member after they accepted
Open Settings → Members, click on the member, choose Remove. The person loses access to the workspace immediately.
What stays:
- Expenses they were associated with stay in the workspace (with the person still tagged)
- The member's FamSpend account isn't deleted — they can still sign in, just don't see this workspace anymore
To re-add the person, send a new invite.
The last admin can't be removed
A workspace must have at least one admin. If you're the only admin and try to remove yourself or strip your admin role, FamSpend blocks the action.
To leave a workspace where you're the only admin: first promote someone else to admin, then remove yourself.
Before inviting
A short checklist, two minutes:
- Decide the role. For a partner usually editor (can edit but not administer). For someone you want to keep an eye without being able to change anything, viewer.
- Verify the email. If you typo, the invite goes to the wrong address and doesn't come back. The person will say "I didn't receive it" and you'll have to recreate.
- Tell the person an email from FamSpend is on the way, so they don't trash it as spam.
Multi-workspace is OK
A member can be in multiple workspaces. Example: you have a workspace "Home" with your partner, and a workspace "Beach house" with your parents. You're a member of both, each independent.
To switch workspaces, there's the picker at the top-left of the app.
AI Helper for invites?
No, not at the moment. Invites involve real emails and permanent role changes — they're operations we want you to do at the interface yourself, not delegated.
